American Egg Board
The Project
The American Egg Board (AEB) is the national marketing organization of America’s egg farmers whose mission is to increase demand for eggs and egg products through research, education and promotion.
For over 40 years, America’s egg farmers have supported the White House Easter Egg Roll, donating thousands of hand-dyed eggs used for activities on the lawn and partnering with egg farmers to serve as ambassadors to teach attendees about egg farming.
In early 2023, ahead of the beloved White House Easter Egg Roll, an avian influenza outbreak caused temporary egg shortages and price inflation across the U.S., directly impacting consumers—especially the 34 million people in America who are food insecure.
AEB challenged America’s egg farmers to collectively donate 2 million eggs to food banks in their local communities during the two weeks leading up to the White House Easter Egg Roll, culminating in a final donation to the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington D.C.
AEB partnered with Inspire to support public relations and media relations efforts around the program, which was named Fighting Hunger by the Dozens. The entire program was planned, launched and executed in six weeks.
The four specific objectives included:
-
Encourage egg farmers to support hunger relief by donating eggs to local food banks ahead of Easter and Passover, to donate a total of 2 million total eggs across the country.
-
Use earned media and social media to raise awareness of donations, highlighting farmers’ involvement in, and support of, their local communities.
-
Share the stories of America’s egg farmers to build consumer trust and confidence in farmers to continue producing safe, healthy eggs during a challenging time.
-
Educate consumers on egg nutrition, including how eggs remain an affordable source of high-quality protein, especially for those in need.
The Results
Media and social coverage of the program in late March and early April 2023 reached more than 37.8 million Americans and was featured by media outlets 320 times across 40 states through TV, online news and radio.
More than 20 egg farms in 19 states directly provided 5.5 million eggs to local food banks, which far exceeded the original objective to donate 2 million eggs, setting the record as one of the largest egg donation events in history.
